While Westerners are familiar with books on the “Tibetan Book of the Dead,” these largely refer to that of the great treasure revealor, Karma Lingpa (), . However, bardo teachings are part of the ancient core of tantric teachings originating in India. Codified by Tilopa (), he himself recieved them from other famous members of the legendary 84 Mahasiddas. And since the time of Karma Lingpa, many further revelations and guidebooks for traveling the Bardo were discovered. This class of teachings, called Neh Dren, follow a precise series of steps to lead the deceased individual to a favorable outcome. At the least, this would be a positive human birth. Better would be entry into a pure realm. And optimally, the departed can acheive full realization at various points in the afterdeath state.
